Varun Gandhi officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004 along with his mother Maneka Gandhi. In the 2009 general elections, Varun contested from Pilibhit constituency. He won with 419,539 votes and defeated the nearest competing candidate VM Singh by a margin of 281,501 votes. This was the most significant victory achieved by the Gandhi family by a narrow margin. In 2013, then-BJP leader Rajnath Singh appointed Varun as the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He became the youngest party general secretary in history. In the 2014 general elections, Varun contested from Sultanpur constituency and defeated Amrita Singh. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Pilibhit constituency and won.
