In a new ESPN video, Rome talks about his maternal grandfather and the impact he had on his life. The Bunnell family is overjoyed at Romeo’s success, and even though Wayne can’t see his grandson play on the field, the loud applause that follows Romeo’s name fills him with pride.
Wayne Bunnell, Rome Odunze’s grandfather
Wayne Bunnell, Rome Odunze’s maternal grandfather, is a big influence on the Huskies player. ESPN recently investigated Romeo and his relationship with his grandfather. Previously, in an interview with 247Sports, Rome said his grandfather, Wayne, taught him how to milk cows. He spent a large part of his childhood on the farms of his grandparents.
The ESPN video was filmed on the day of the Sugar Bowl when all of Bunnell was rooting for Romo and his team. The football player is closer to his mother’s family, which can be seen from his mother’s social media name, Necia Bunnell. In the video, a young Roma can be seen riding on his grandfather’s tractor. He would spend summers on his grandfather’s dairy farm, working alongside him. In the film, Necia explains that her father in Rome tried to inculcate her in hard work from an early age. The player agrees with that sentiment and attributes his work ethic to his grandfather.
Rome claims that his grandfather worked on the farm for a long time to make ends meet. Wayne’s top priority was fitness while working on the farm, and after getting up at 4 a.m. to milk 80 cows, he would go on a 30-mile bike ride.
Wayne Bunnell’s accident
However, one event changed Wayne’s life. He had an accident and fell over the handlebars on August 4, 2016. Wayne hit his head and had a traumatic brain injury. Wayne was wearing a helmet at the time, but it could not protect him from the crash due to the speed.
Wayne claims in his interview that he does not remember the collision. Wayne lost his sight after the accident, and Necia claims that he had to give up farming and that it was a complete life change. Wayne has never seen Romeo play for the Huskies, but every time they play, he sits in his recliner and listens to Romeo’s plays. Wayne says in the film, “It’s nice to see him doing well and achieving a lot.” I adore him and I’m proud of him.”
James Odindu Odunze, Rome Odunze’s paternal grandfather
The Huskies athlete appears to have become estranged from his father’s family. He never mentioned his father in any of the previous interviews. However, a Facebook post by his uncle Ikenna Odunza provides insight into his other relatives. Ikenna posted on Facebook to boast about Roma’s sporting achievements.
He made the tweet in 2018 while Rome was a member of his high school team, the Bishop Gorman Gaels. He broke the state record for receiving yards in a single game at Nevada. Ikenna said Rome followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Odindu Odunze, by achieving the athletics record. His grandfather’s sporting achievements are unknown, although he received a Ph.D. Odindu Odunze, sometimes known as James Odunze, may have obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. He has a Facebook profile, but he doesn’t seem to be a frequent social media user.
