Authorities say a woman died after becoming “sick” on an American Airlines flight from the Dominican Republic.

The flight was en route to Charlotte, NC, on Wednesday when a 41-year-old woman became ill, according to a news release from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police.

Flight 2790 was diverted to Providenciales International Airport due to the passenger’s “medical needs,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The air traffic control tower requested medical assistance for the woman, “who was undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the time,” around 6:15 p.m. local time, according to police.

“A medical team was dispatched, along with police units,” police said, “and the patient was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Center, where she died.”

An autopsy will be performed to determine the woman’s cause of death, authorities said. The woman’s name has not been made public, although Fox affiliate WXIN-TV reported that she is from Indiana.

Flight 94 was diverted to Boston less than two hours after the flight to Spain, which took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York around 7:30 p.m. local time, Massachusetts State Police said, according to The Independent.

The plane landed safely at Logan International Airport shortly before 10:15 p.m., NBC Boston and CBS affiliate WBZ-TV reported. Passengers were forced to stay in Boston overnight.

American Airlines said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that the plane landed at Logan “due to a maintenance issue” and was “taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team.”
