6 Emily in Paris Looks That Are Anything but Demure (and Forget About Mindful)

Emily is back in Paris – and she is not have a modest summer.

Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, has long been known for her, ahem, distinct fashion. Since Season 1 of the show, the character has embraced bold colors, exaggerated silhouettes, and all kinds of conversation starters when it comes to fashion choices.

Then Season 4, Part 1 came out on August 14th, and Netflix delivered a new collection of Emily-approved clothes (plus a few winners on our other favorite French shows), and we have so much to talk about.

Without giving too much away about Season 4, let’s take a look at some of the best fashion moments of the first half of the season, starting with Emily’s black and white striped cat masquerade costume in episode 3. The look was complete with a cape, hat and mask — all for drama, of course.

There’s actually a lot more to the look story, as she tells InStyle in her latest feature. It turns out that the look, which she helped create with the show’s costume department, didn’t quite fit the script of how Emily would arrive at the ball, but Collins really wanted all the flair. No modesty. No attention.

“I was like, ‘No, no, no—we have to show the whole thing,'” she told the Harris Reed-designed clothing store. So she and director Andrew Fleming reconfigured how Emily would arrive at the ball so that it all made sense and she could still have the full look — cape, hat and all.

There’s also a delightfully flowy pastel coat that’s perfectly out of place among the more refined palates of Parisian chic, as well as an open ruffled button-up with a bold pattern that the young creative paired with green trousers. Although a little more modest, those frills (and green pants) are a little more suggestive of bratty summer, we think.

Speaking of party summer that hasn’t left us yet, Emily’s green dress and Mindy’s (Ashley Park) vibrant green heels scream to us that both characters aren’t ready to leave the trend behind.

Then there’s Camille (Camille Razat), who is definitely not having a modest season, or a brat season. She’s currently wearing this oversized silver bow-tie bra, which pops off her otherwise all-black look.

And we can’t forget Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu). This look is far from modest — it’s a French classic, because that’s exactly what Sylvie is. Her sleeveless turtleneck look offers a touch of shine, a hint of clinging to the body and so much understated glamor that we don’t even know what to do. But Sylvie has always been a fashion icon, so the perfect look is no surprise.
