Donna Kelce says it’s great that her son, NFL star Travis Kelce, is “very ready to train” ahead of his acting debut.
Donna, who is also Jason Kelce’s mother, attended the FX series GrotesquenessPremiere in New York on Monday, September 23, in support of Travis’ new role.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, was not at the event, which took place a day after his team beat the Atlanta Falcons 22-17.
Donna, 71, tells PEOPLE exclusively while at the event that she is “not really” nervous to see Travis make his acting debut.
“I’ve been watching those boys for years, since they were 3 years old on the field or in sports or in band or anything at school — in plays,” she says. “You know, it’s just a mom watching her kids.”

Although this is Travis’ scripted TV debut, Donna isn’t surprised he’s joining the series. “I think it’s something he’s always had in the back of his mind,” she says.
“He is very trainable. That’s one good thing he does,” she continues. “But I just think he thought, ‘If I get a chance [like this]I’d like to try.’ ”
Travis is “pretty good at almost everything he does because he has a good work ethic,” says Donna.

Travis’ Grotesqueness host, Niecy Nash-Betts, echoed Donna’s statement and told PEOPLE at the premiere that the Super Bowl winner was “very professional” and “always came prepared” to the set.
“Travis was very open. He was very open when given a note or a suggestion. So amenable. ‘Tell me what I don’t know. Tell me what you think about this,'” she told PEOPLE. “I like that he didn’t come in trying to act like, ‘I know everything and I know everything.’ ”

Nash-Betts, 54, stars as detective Lois Tryon, who witnesses a “series of heinous crimes” in a small town that feels “chillingly personal,” in the series written and created by Ryan Murphy. Details about Travis’ character remain unknown.
Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville also star as Nash-Betts’ husband Marshall and nurse Redd. Micaela Diamond, Raven Goodwin and Nicholas Alexander Chavez round out the main cast.
