Emma Thompson and Greg Wise’s Relationship: All About the Actors’ Marriage

Emma Thompson and Greg Wise have been married for two decades.

The duo met for the first time during the filming of the 1995 drama Reason and feelings, which is based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. Thompson played Elinor Dashwood and Wise played John Willoughby.

Before filming, Wise visited a “wizard” friend who told him that he would meet the love of his life on the set of the film.

“He assumed it wasn’t me because I was married and a lot older than him, so he thought it might be Kate. [Winslet, Thompson and Wise’s costar on Sense & Sensibility]”, Thompson said during a guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2021, per Hello!.

The Matilda star explained that Wise took Winslet to the Glastonbury Festival, but Winslet was “so bored,” leading Wise to think his destined partner might be someone else.

She continued: “Then things happened that probably shouldn’t have happened, and in May it’s been 25 years [2021].”

Speaking to BBC Radio 4 later that year, Thompson was candid about her relationship with Wise, crediting her husband with saving her after the breakup of her first marriage to Kenneth Branagh.

“Work saved me and Greg saved me,” she explained to the Independent. “He picked up the pieces and put them back together.”

Kate Winslet suggested they go out

Thompson and Wise’s relationship was supported by Winslet, who suggested the pair get together after Wise initially asked Titanic actress. Although she was married when she first met Wise, Thompson’s marriage to Branagh ended shortly thereafter.

“[Kate] pointed out that we are right for each other and told me that Emma’s marriage is over,” Wise said during an interview with Expressper Hello!. “Everything was meant to be, just as my friend Helen had predicted.”

The difference between them is 7 years

There are seven years between them. Thompson was born on April 15, 1959, while Wise was born on May 15, 1966.

Thompson often shares his refreshing thoughts on aging. In September 2018, as she approached her 60th birthday, she opened Sup about her feelings at the beginning of the new decade.

“I think your 60s, if you’re well, are the most fantastic decade … so this should be one of the most powerful parts of your life, the youth of old age so to speak,” she said. “I’d say it’s the best piece ever.”

They have two children together

The couple has two children. Gaia Wise was born on December 4, 1999, and following the example of her parents, she is also an actress and appeared with her mother in 2008. Last chance Harvey and in 2015 A walk in the forest.

Thompson has starred in several holiday films, including Actually love and Last Christmas. During an appearance on a British talk show in 2019 relaxed women, Wise explained how his wife taught him to love Christmas festivities.

“This is our 24th Christmas together. She somehow forced me to submit with brandy sauce,” he joked.

He went on to explain that he cuts down their Christmas tree by himself near their cottage in Scotland and that he enjoys spending time with his “mates” and all the “nonsense” that comes with it.

In October 2019, the couple prepared a book full of touching holiday stories written by Emilia Clarke, Meryl Streep, Olivia Colman and others.

“We were very lucky to get about 50 people together to write their memories of past Christmases and hopes for future ones,” Wise explained in a video for UK bookstore Waterstones. The book includes the stories of friends of a couple of actors and comedians, as well as stories of those living in poverty and war.

“Somewhat inspired by our son whose story is also in the book,” added Thompson. “Because he was a refugee and I met him at a Christmas party.”

They attended the coronation of King Charles in 2023

The couple were guests at the coronation of King Charles, which took place at London’s Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023. Cookbook writer Manju Malhi attended the ceremony and sat next to Thompson and Wise.

“I asked Greg Wise, is this seat taken? And they both said, ‘Yeah, sit down.’ We were all in it together,” Malhi told PEOPLE.

She added that Wise identified some of the music that was played before the coronation began.

“He identified ‘Jupiter’ from Planets. It was as if I was watching a movie and wondering: ‘What happened there?’ They were both really wonderful.”

In 2018, Wise, Tindy and Gaia supported Nanny McPhee actress as she received the coveted title of Dame for her services and contribution to drama. Prince William presented her with the award at Buckingham Palace.

Thompson is a fan of Wise’s baking

Wise enjoys baking, and in 2019 he participated in the famous version The Great British Bake Off in aid of Stand Up to Cancer. His cakes impressed the judges enough to win the competition.

Thompson supported her husband during his time on the show and enjoyed tasting his creations. During the interview at The Graham Norton Showshe admitted to drunkenly eating one of Wise’s showstoppers — which she later blamed on their daughter.

“He created himself and decided to make a kind of pancake, which is a kilt. So he made some structure, which was him, biscuit legs and then this kilt,” explained the actress. “I came in one night and I had a drink… I saw the kilt and it looked good. It looked good enough to eat, so I ate it.”
