Meghan Markle Sends Message to Kelly Clarkson via Suits Costar — and Reveals She Voted for Her on American Idol

Meghan Markle sent Kelly Clarkson a special message through her friend Abigail Spencer.

On Monday, Spencer, 42, appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show with her Extended family Costar Donald Faison, where she revealed that the Duchess of Sussex is a fan of the singer.

“Meg greets you and says she loves you and voted for you american idol,” she said to the presenter.

“It worked!” Clarkson joked about her big break as the winner of the first season of the singing competition in 2002.

Spencer reported that Meghan, 42, “just had dinner with Michael Bublé, who said you’re the best singer in the world,” and Clarkson self-deprecatingly dismissed the compliment.

“This was uncalled for. She didn’t know I was coming here. We were just talking and I said, ‘Oh, I’m going to see Kelly next week,’ and she’s like, ‘I have a message,'” Spencer said.

Spencer and Meghan starred together on Suits during its original run on USA Network beginning in 2011. Meghan stepped back from the legal drama shortly after she and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November 2017. Spencer attended the couple’s royal wedding in London the following spring and was a guest at the Duchess of Sussex’s baby shower in New York when she was expecting Prince Archie, 4, in February 2019.

Meghan and Prince Harry, 39, later moved to her home state of California after stepping back from their royal roles in 2020, and Spencer joined Meghan at Prince Harry’s polo match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in May 2022.

Spencer began talking about the Duchess of Sussex after Faison talked about her longtime friendship with Zach Braff, after Clarkson asked if she had “someone like that in the industry.”

“It was 2007, I was doing a pilot for NBC and I went to read with the people who were going to play my best friend. They tested other actresses,” Spencer said. “I walk in, I see this beautiful beautiful creature at the end of the table and I’m like, ‘Who is that?’ We had something right away, you know? And her name is Meghan Markle.”

The actress added that she and Meghan “connected immediately” and soon found out that they shared the same birthday.

“It was just something between us,” Spencer said, fondly recalling how their paths crossed again when they acted together Suits. The future Duchess of Sussex played legal assistant Rachel Zane, while Spencer appeared as Dana Scott, rival and lover of Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht).

While Suits ended after nine seasons in 2019, the series broke streaming records after it first appeared on Netflix in June 2023, likely reaching new audiences intrigued by Meghan’s acting past. The Duchess of Sussex is described Suits‘ streaming success as “wild” on DiversityPower of Women event in Los Angeles in November 2023, and PEOPLE confirmed in early February that NBCUniversal had ordered a spinoff pilot, Fits LA.

Project, under the leadership Suits from creator Aaron Korsh, will have an all-new cast, although it remains unknown if any cast members from the original series will appear. However, fans are unlikely to catch Meghan in character in front of the camera again. In an interview for her joint engagement with Prince Harry in November 2017, she said she would no longer act.

“I don’t see it as giving up anything. I just see it as a change,” she said at the time. “It’s a new chapter, isn’t it? And also, mind you, I’ve been working on [Suits] in seven years. We’ve been very, very fortunate to have had such longevity in the series. I ticked this box and feel very proud of the work I did there, and now it’s time to work with [Harry] as a team.”

She reiterated that she has no plans to act again during the 2022 interview Diversity: “No. I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is absolutely not.”

However, the Duchess of Sussex hinted at the production possibilities at Diversity carpet in November.

“We have so many exciting things on the list. I can’t wait to release them,” she said.
