Pennington shared on Instagram in July that he was hospitalized in intensive care after waking up at 4 a.m., two days after Barbie premiere on the red carpet, “and could hardly breathe.”
“It turns out that the sore throat I’ve had for the past month was actually an abscess that had grown so large it was blocking my airway,” he wrote alongside photos of himself in a hospital bed. “Next thing I know, I was intubated and transferred to intensive care in Denver.”
An abscess is a collection of pus that forms when a part of the body becomes infected and the immune system tries to fight it. White blood cells travel to the infected area and accumulate within the damaged tissue, leading to inflammation and causing the pocket to form, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Internal abscesses are usually treated under anesthesia where the doctor uses a catheter to drain the abscess. Pennington underwent surgery for an abscess and was released from the ICU a day later.

Pennington said ET that the whole experience gave him a greater perspective on how limited time is here on Earth. “It made me realize that you just don’t know when they’re going to pull your time card, so wake up and live each day to the fullest,” he said.
It also helped him realize the importance of seeing his new projects including the fifth season of his HGTV reality competition series, Rock the Block.

“I mean, that’s why the 60s is going to be like the time to start doing everything and that’s what I love about being a part of these projects because I think we all want to make sure we’ve done things that will be remembered,” he shared.
“I think this season might be the best season ever because there’s so much at stake, because it’s about pride and saying ‘I’m a winner,'” Pennington continued. “And when you have four teams trying to prove themselves, there’s nothing they can hold back, and that’s the kind of design, that’s the kind of passion that I like to see.”
Rock the Block airs Mondays (9 p.m. ET) on HGTV. The first four seasons can be streamed on Max.
