Teen Who Plays Prince Harry in The Crown Reveals His Mom’s Sunscreen Trick Ahead of Filming Season 6

For Fflyn Edwards, the news that he has been cast as Prince Harry in the hit series Crown wouldn’t get in the way of his day at the beach!

When the 14-year-old insisted on staying by the coast in West Wales, his protective mother had some special precautions up her sleeve to ensure he didn’t ruin his tan like Prince Harry in the sun ahead of the shoot.

Edwards’ mother rushed to the beach to tell him he had landed the prestigious role while he was with friends in St. Davids, not far from his family home in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

“We were down in St. Davids [and] I was down at the beach playing with my friends. Mom came, put suntan lotion on me and said I got the part – but [said] I shouldn’t have done it if I had a tan,” he told BBC Wales recently. “So mom took pictures and took pictures of me.”

Crown Creator Peter Morgan reveals how the death of Queen Elizabeth changed the end of the series

Edwards admitted he hadn’t watched the hit royal saga about Queen Elizabeth and the modern royal family and had to research everything about the real Prince Harry via YouTube videos.

He had to not only master Harry’s accent, but also get used to wearing a wig that gave him his royal signature red hair. (It was “boiling” while I wore it and “when I wanted to scratch my head, I couldn’t because I was worried I’d dislodge it,” he said.)

Not only that, but Welsh is Flynn’s first language and luckily for him there were actors who spoke it on set.

“It was really nice because I was away from home [so it was good] to see Welsh people and talk to them in the language,” he told the BBC. “Speaking in English for a long time makes me miss the language, and I’m talking to someone [in Welsh] it feels like home.”

Whether they will now look at all the background stories of the royal family, through the early seasons, is an open question. Sports could come first!

“I might start watching it, but for now I might stick to rugby,” the teenager told the BBC.

The first part of the last sixth season of the series Crown will debut on Netflix on November 16, and will see Harry and his brother Prince William with their mother Princess Diana in the final weeks before her death.

The sixth season marks the end of the series itself. The three actresses who played the late Queen Elizabeth were celebrated in this week’s issue of PEOPLE for the way they captured one of the major icons of the last century.

“People forget how beautiful Elizabeth was,” Crown’s costume designer Amy Roberts told PEOPLE. “As this young girl grows up, the discipline she brings to herself is remarkable. Her clothes may be modern, but there’s a slightly more controlled element to them.”

Robert Lacey, historical adviser to the series, adds: “Those were very glamorous years. The Queen was the most glamorous figure in the world, and Claire Foy portrayed that well. [Foy] it also conveyed her fragility and insecurity and how she grew into the role.”

The role went to Olivia Colman in seasons three and four, who plays a middle-aged queen who isn’t afraid to clash with her prime ministers over politics.

“These periods showed how the queen could be closer to her people than to their elected representatives,” explains Lacey.

And Imelda Staunton, who ends her role as Queen in seasons 5 and 6, gracefully portrays the monarch’s tumultuous later years.

“She caught a glimmer in the midst of the gloom. She brought a great softness to the strict side of the queen,” he tells PEOPLE. “These were years of family problems that threatened to derail the family institution. You could say she kept him on track.”
